My iPhone 4 (AT&T) recently took a short fall off of a couch onto a hardwood floor. Nothing cracked, the only issue was the power button would no longer depress correctly. After running my iPhone battery dead, since I couldn’t power it off, I carefully took it apart and verified that the power and sensor cable was missing the tiny black nub on the power button. I put the iPhone back together and powered it back on with my chargier. It came back on with no issues, everything else worked. I ordered the Power & Sensor cable from iFixit. After receiving it, I drained the battery again so the phone would power off and carefully replaced the cable. I was sure to take all of the parts off the old cable that weren’t included with the new cable. After installation (no cables torn, everything intact), I powered the iPhone back on. This time though, successfully powered on and off with the power button! However, there was a huge issue now. The screen resolution was horrible and there were “lines” running horizontally across the screen. It basically looks like going from HD to SD (maybe worse). There’s no flickering at all though. The other issue is that the proximity sensor does not seem to be working. I did a few test calls, and the LCD is not blacking out when I bring the phone to my ear. I’ve tried searching, and all I’m seeing is that either my cables aren’t connected well or that the screen is bad. Considering how carefully I proceeded with the repair, and the fact that the screen was fine before I replaced the cable, I really don’t think the screen or screen cables are bad. Anyone else have this issue? Is it possible that I have something wrong with my power and sensor cable that’s causing the issue with the screen?? Thanks!!!

Question 1 - Poor LCD Screen: This is an issue with the screen itself. It is highly unlikely that the proximity / power sensor flex is causing any issues with your screen at all. I would recommend removing your screen and inspecting the LCD flex cable and connection and also inspecting the back of the LCD screen. If the left most screw of the metal wifi emi shield is screwed too tightly it can damage the back of the LCD screen. Question 2 - Faulty Proximity Sensor: If the screen hasn’t been replaced there are only 2 other variables to the proximity sensor working: 1 - the proximity sensor itself 2 - the proximity sensor UV filter sticker with foam If you bought the flex cable from a legitimate dealer ( like iFixit ) I doubt the flex cable is faulty so that leads me to the most common installation fault - the uv filter sticker. This is a sticker that comes in 2 parts - a square foam sticker and a ‘purple’ coloured plastic square piece. These are fitted on top of the proximity sensor which is the right square as you look at the phone from the front and left square as you look from the back. The power button repair seems to be quickly becoming a very very common repair on the iPhone 4 and replacing this sticker is the most common installation error as it looks as though it’s actually fitted to the old flex (but it is removable) We sell the sticker from our website: HERE And a picture of the installed sticker can be found: HERE Without this sticker the proximity sensor can’t filter the light properly and doesn’t recognise that the phone is being held to your ear. Please disregard any other methods of repair you may find that involve a pen or insulation tape!

Hi! Maybe you forced the LCD cable, because you have to press it in order to access the screws to loose the power cable. I have the same issue with proximity sensor yesterday, I’ll try what happened and I’ll tell you.

If you are experiencing this, the proximity sensor of the iPhone 4 might be the problem. Replacing the iPhone 4 proximity sensor flex cable will ensure your iPhone is able to function.

I have done the same thing. i had to replace the power button flex cable. it works fine now. i had trouble getting around the LCD flex cable and was concerned about damaging it. i attempted to remove the Digitizer, LCD front piece and managed to get it half way off when i noticed the home button area was highly resistant. i gave it up and put the screws back in. i finished the task of replacing the power button flex cable. The logic board did not fit correctly. i realized the power button bracket was not set correctly and reset it so the logic board would fit. next, i noticed the digitizer cable would not reach the socket on the logic board. i had to detach the top halve of the LCD / digitizer front piece again and free the slack of the digitizer cable trapped under the front piece. Now that every thing is all put together correctly, i noticed the horizontal lines. : A replacement LCD/Digitizer assembly can be bought for $30 or less on eBay. I plan to deal with my damaged LCD and replace it only if it becomes unusable. i do not know if i tightened the afore mentioned wifi EMI screw too much or if i damaged the LCD flex cable or the LCD when i attempted to remove the front assembly.

Sounds like you may need to replace the screen, which provider are you with? Vodafone do a good deal on repairs now even if you’ve tampered with it so no need to fiddle with it yourself!
